Monster Sushi: One Stop for Authentic Japanese Food

In high school, I worked part-time in a Japanese restaurant. There, I learned the tricks and the trades on how to make Japanese cuisine– everything from sushi to Unagi Bowls.

And not to “toot my own horn,” but when it comes to Japanese, I’m a snooty-foodie.

If you’re in New York City for the summer, I recommend checking out Monster Sushi!  They have a location in Midtown as well as in Chelsea.  It’s a one stop for authentic Japanese food. I stopped in last week and was glad that I did!

When I walked in, they were playing “You Are My Everything” by Barry White.  I sat at the Sushi Bar decorated in Godzilla memorabilia donated by friends of the restaurant; was handed the oshibori, a warm cleansing towel which is also a Japanese tradition; and was  surprised to see the large selection of Japanese cuisine that was on the menu.  The menu had everything from Pork Shogyaki to the Santa Claus Sushi Roll.

The woman who I sat next to at the bar was a regular– she didn’t have  to look at the menu, rather, immediately ordered the “norm.”  I, on the other hand, was excited to try something I’ve never had before, like the Tori Katsudon which is basically a fried chicken rice bowl with egg and onion; it was delicious!

おいしそうですね。 "It looks good, doesn't it?"

And for desert, someone recommended the Fried Icecream, which is made the same way as Tempura.  The only time I’ve had fried icecream was at a Mexican restaurant in Colorado, but, unlike the fried icecream out west, Japanese Fried Icecream comes in an array of flavors from Red Bean to Green Tea.  We chose the Ginger Fried Icecream… おいしかった.  It was delicious.

All-in-all, if you are looking for a variety of Sake, looking to get your sushi fix, or want to take your friends out to a Japanese dinner, be sure to check out Monster Sushi.  They also have a Bento Box Lunch Special that no one in their right mind can pass up!

If you become a fan, be sure to like them on Facebook and check out their Twitter and WordPress.  Furthermore, with this coupon, you can save some money on your next visit to Monster Sushi.  Enjoy!
